On our first day back in Kathmandu we visit the Pashupatinath Temple, the Bodhnath Stupa, and the Swayambhunath Temple. We also watch some cremations along the Bagmati River.
This is a photo of a cremation at the Pashupatinath Temple along the Bagmati River. After the body is burned
the ashes are swept into the river.
This is the start of another cremation. The body is being placed on a stack of
firewood.
This is the same body that was shown in the previous photo. I couldn't see
exactly what was happening, but it looked like a flammable substance was put in
the mouth. That is where they started the fire first (you can see the flames in
the photo). Afterward they started the fire under the wood pile.
This is another body waiting for cremation.
This is the other side of the river. Lots of spectators watching.
Another view of the cremations. Two bodies are burning and one is on the ground
waiting to be put on a wood pile.
Another view.
Getting ready to move the last body to the wood pile.
The top of the Bodhnath Stupa (a temple).
Lots of prayer flags near Swayambhunath Temple (the "monkey" temple).
And more prayer flags.
And of course, monkeys.
Lots of them.
