We hiked back to Gorak Shep and had lunch at the tea house. From there we took the trail to Kala Patthar (correct spelling, the sign is spelled wrong). Kala Patthar is a viewpoint where you can get great views of Mt. Everest and the Himalayas.
We arrive at the top of Kala Patthar at about 3:00 PM. The elevation is 18,176 ft, our highest point of the trip. Mt. Everest (29,028 ft) is the darker mountain in center of the photo. Nuptse (25,850 ft) is the pointed one on the right side. The Khumbu Glacier and Khumbu Icefall are visible. Everest Base Camp is on the glacier on the left side of the photo, where the glacier turns. Base camp is not visible in the photo (we are too far away).
A small panorama. You may have to scroll to the right to see it all.
Winny's camera was acting up. This is the only photo of the two of us on Kala Patthar. Mt. Everest is visible in the back.
This is a view of Ama Dablam from part way down Kala Patthar.
We hiked 11 hours this day, not counting breaks. All of it was above 16,000 ft elevation, some over 18,000 ft. We started at 3:45 AM and didn't return to Lobuche until it was starting to get dark.
We had to be on the trail at 5:00 AM to catch up with the rest of the group (since they didn't hike to Everest Base Camp, they spent the night at a different tea house). It was cold and dark when we left, and we were still tired from hiking the previous day. We caught up with the rest of the group around 7:00 AM in Pheriche and had breakfast with them. After breakfast we started our hike to Namche Bazaar.
A view along the way.
We catch up with our porters. These two carry the gear for 7 of us.
We stop in Tengboche for lunch. There is a really nice bakery here. Not what you would expect. This was a welcome break since we just finished a long, steep uphill section of trail.
After lunch we hiked back to Namche Bazaar. We stayed in the same tea house we stayed at on our way up. Today we hiked over 15 miles, starting at 16,123 ft elevation and ending at 11,188 ft. We had a net loss in elevation, but there was plenty of steep uphill in between.
